CO2 problems, diagnosed
The five symptoms that send hobbyists searching, and what's actually behind each one.
Fish gasping at the surface
This is the one symptom to treat as urgent. Fish and shrimp gasping, or clustering near the surface or an outflow, usually means dissolved oxygen has dropped as CO2 has risen — the two are inversely related in the same water. Turn off or drastically reduce CO2 injection immediately, and increase surface agitation (a spray bar break, an airstone, or briefly lifting a lid) to speed gas exchange. Don't wait until morning to see if it settles. Once livestock looks normal again, recalculate your target with the calculator before restarting CO2, and bring the bubble rate back up more slowly than before.
Algae persists even though CO2 is running
"I have CO2 and still have algae" almost always means the CO2 delivery is inconsistent, not that CO2 is irrelevant. A few common causes:
- CO2 isn't stable across the whole photoperiod. A regulator turning on right as lights come on means the tank spends the first hour or two under-carbonated while plants are already trying to photosynthesize — exactly when algae gets an opening. Turning the solenoid on 1–2 hours before lights is the standard fix.
- Flow isn't reaching the whole tank. A powerful diffuser near the outlet does nothing for a stagnant back corner. Algae tends to show up first in the low-flow dead zones.
- The CO2/light/nutrient triangle is out of balance. Very high light with inconsistent CO2 is a common recipe — turning lighting down can sometimes fix an algae problem faster than trying to push CO2 higher.
Drop checker won't change color, or changes too slowly
A drop checker is inherently slow — it's designed to average conditions over roughly an hour, not report the current instant. But if it seems stuck entirely:
- Check the reference fluid age. Drop checker solution degrades, especially once opened. A checker that's always green or always blue regardless of what you do in the tank often just needs fresh fluid.
- Check its position. Mounted too high near the surface, it reads closer to atmospheric CO2 than to your tank's actual dissolved CO2. Lower and mid-tank placement, away from direct bubble contact, is more representative.
- Give it time before judging. Any time you change your bubble rate, wait a full day and check at the same time each day rather than watching it minute to minute.
Plants stopped pearling
Pearling (visible oxygen bubbles streaming off leaves) is a sign of strong photosynthesis, not a strict requirement for a healthy tank — plenty of well-run tanks pearl only for an hour near the end of the photoperiod, or barely at all. If pearling that used to happen has stopped, the most common causes are a CO2 rate that's drifted down (check your diffuser isn't clogged or your cylinder isn't running low), a light that's aged and dimmed, or a nutrient deficiency limiting growth even with adequate CO2 and light.
pH swings sharply overnight
If your CO2 solenoid turns off at night (the usual setup, since plants don't consume CO2 without light), pH will rise overnight as residual CO2 outgasses, then drop again once injection resumes the next day. Some swing is normal and expected — a few tenths of a point across a day. A swing much larger than that alongside gasping fish suggests the daytime CO2 level was pushed too high to begin with; recheck your target ppm with the calculator rather than treating the swing itself as the problem.
